A mulberry fish pond, also known as a mulberry dike-fish pond system or mulberry plot-fish pond, precedes today's popular "permaculture" theory. This sustainable agricultural system integrates mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing, and fish farming within a single high-efficiency ecosystem.
Traditional fishpond operation and garden plot on adjacent lands, showing energy and nutrient flows in a closed system, in which waste from one function is used in other functions. Healthy and productive dikes will support the growing of mulberry trees that could enrich the soil, various crops, and fruit trees. The edge space between the dike and the pond could be seen as a micro-wetland, where local aquatic species are scattered. The interaction between ducks, aquatic plants, fishes, mulberry trees, and crops could come up with a sustainable and closed cycle. Intensive fish farming would be replaced by a self-regulating organic system that can increaseb lake biodiversity.
Mulberry Fish Output
Aquatic Output: The fish species used in the pond will provide people with an abundance of high-quality and safe protein.
Mulberry Tea: Mulberry leaves in the system have been made into tea, they contain 18 different amino acids required by humans. It inhibits the increase of blood sugar content after meals for diabetics.
Mulberry Leaf Powder: Mulberry leaves are also used to make mulberry leaf powder , which can be used to make cakes, yogurt, biscuits, noodles, deserts, and animal feed.
Mulberry Fruit Products: The fruit of the mulberry tree is rich in active proteins, vitamins, essential amino acids, carotene, and minerals.
Silkworm Pupae, Silk Protein Products and Processed Products: Silkworm pupae are an Asian snacks and are a highly nutritious food. Silk is the natural protein spun by the silkworms and can be used for the silk industry.
Mutton: Branches and leaves of mulberry trees are one of the most important foods for sheep.
